Fixed People Meters was all that was needed in the days when people consumed television primarily only in their homes and on a small number of fixed appliances.
Yet as media consumption has moved out into the wider world, it has become necessary to measure all of the media that audiences are exposed to during their busy lives. Meanwhile the demand for electronic passive measurement of radio has been accelerated by the move to digital.
This need has been met by Portable People Meters (PPMs), of which some 50,000 are now in use across the world and is licenced by Kantar Media from Arbitron. PPM provides currency measurement services in the USA, Canada, Norway, Denmark, Iceland and Kazakhstan.
Carried throughout the day by panel members, these highly portable devices are able to detect unique codes embedded within the audio part of any transmission thereby moving electronic measurement beyond the fixed TV or radio to prtable devices and out of the home into cars, bars, supermarkets and even the workplace.
Importantly, Portable People Meter technology enables tracking of digital and analogue broadcasts, whether carried over the air or by cable, satellite or Internet, making it the most universal and accurate audience measurement device yet devised.
